Parents Relieved To Reunite With Their Kids After School Shooting
PERRY HALL, Md. (WJZ) -- The first day of school is generally happy for parents, but those with students at Perry Hall High School spent hours filled with anxiety after a school shooting Monday morning.
Jessica Kartalija has more.
"We are all very concerned and hopefully everyone is going to make it out OK with no problems," said Kathy Lamarr.
As 2,300 students were evacuated, distraught parents struggled to contact their children.
"It was wonderful to be able to see him walking up the street and to give him a hug--but not to embarrass him in front of his friends but to let him know that I love him and I am thankful that he is OK," said one mother.
Students say they were told to stay off of cell phones while evacuating the school's cafeteria, making it difficult to connect with parents.
"I had sent her a text that I love her and the next text that I got was that...somebody just got shot by her and I just lost it. I just got in my car and left and they wouldn't let us down by the high school and so we went to the middle school," said one parent. "When I saw her, I just lost it. I just had to hug her and make sure she was OK."
Superintendent Dallas Dance says the district is making efforts to keep parents informed.
"There will be a letter going home with parents tomorrow. I know in the age of social media, I know there were students making contact with parents, as well," Dance said.
"It's very unfortunate on the first day of school for this to happen," Lamarr said.
