Pakistani Indicted In Alleged Nuclear Export Scheme
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Federal prosecutors say a Pakistani national is facing charges he conspired to illegally export nuclear reactor materials to Pakistan.
The U.S. Attorney's office says Nadeem Akhtar, 45, of Silver Spring was ordered held Wednesday pending a detention hearing Thursday in U.S. District Court in Baltimore.
According to the indictment, between October 2005 and March 2010, Akhtar conspired to export restricted goods and technology without necessary licenses. The items included radiation detection devices, resins for cooling water purification, and calibration and switching equipment.
The U.S. Attorney's Office said Akhtar, the owner of Computer Communications USA, faces up to 20 years on charges including illegal export and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
