Pregnant Lacrosse Coach From Baltimore Killed When Team Bus Crashes Into Tree
CARLISLE, Pa. (WJZ) -- Lacrosse tragedy. A Seton Hill University team bus crashes into a tree.
Adam May reports a Baltimore native -- the coach -- is among the dead.
Almost a dozen players and others associated with the team were rushed to hospitals. The coach and the bus driver were both killed.
The front end of a charter bus was practically ripped off when it veered off the road and smashed into a tree along the Pennsylvania Turnpike outside Harrisburg.
On board, the women's lacrosse team from Seton Hill University, which has four players from Maryland. Almost a dozen were hurt.
"They range from minor to severe. A few folks have been treated and released but we do have individuals still being treated at the hospital. One individual was killed died on the scene at the accident, and we have another individual who died later at the hospital," officials said.
Fatalities include the 61-year-old driver and Kristina Quigley, the coach and Baltimore native who was six months pregnant. Her unborn baby boy also died.
News of the accident shocked the small campus just outside of Pittsburgh.
"My roommate was on the lacrosse team so I was very nervous, but I found out she is OK," a student said.
Weather at the time of the accident was a mix of snow and rain. Hours after the crash police were still busy at the scene, trying to figure out what happened.
"We still have investigators, our crash reconstructionists, our forensics team. They're still at the scene right now collecting evidence," said Rob Hicks, Pa. State Police.
WJZ has learned the charter bus company has a clean safety record, ranked the highest possible by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The team's assistant coach and Baltimore native Cristen Andfilippo was also on the bus. It's unclear how seriously she was hurt.
Some of the injured players are still in hospitals.
