Oxford-Bellevue Ferry Reopens On Bay For 2014
OXFORD, Md. (AP) -- The ferry between Oxford and Bellevue will begin operating again this year in time for the Easter weekend.
The Easton Star Democrat reports the nation's oldest privately operated ferry service will start its 2014 season on Friday. The ferry was founded in 1683 and will commemorate its 331st birthday in November. It crosses an inlet on the Chesapeake Bay near Easton.
Captains Tom and Judy Bixler of Oxford have owned the ferry for the past 13 years. The crew is mostly made up of students and retirees.
The Oxford-Bellevue Ferry operates seven days a week between April and October. Crossings begin at 9 a.m. each day and continue every 15 to 20 minutes. It runs on weekends in November.
