Wineries May Soon Be Able To Direct Ship To Md. Consumers
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ)—The Maryland General Assembly is about to break tradition and allow wineries to ship directly to consumers.
Political reporter Pat Warren explains both the House and the Senate appear to be giving direct wine shipping the green light.
You've searched the shelves in vain for that amusing little wine you enjoyed in Napa and not finding it in stores, hopped online and there it is. But you can't buy it because Maryland law won't allow them to ship it. Now you've got a reason to whine.
This year, the General Assembly seems to agree. It's time to ship the wine.
"It's going to be a very significant vote here, and I think it's time we move forward," said Mike Miller.
Time and technology have advanced the idea that local retailers can stand up to out-of-state shipments from wineries.
The Senate committee chair says consumers can start making their shopping lists.
"They will definitely have access and the access will be with the wineries," said Joan Carter Conway.
The House committee chair says it's on a fast track there.
"I want to get it done as quickly as possible, get it to the governor's desk and hopefully we can put the issue behind us," Derek Davis said.
The House of Delegates could give final approval this weekend. It's holding a Saturday session.
The bill does not allow shipments from retailers.
