Orioles' Buck Showalter Takes Cover As Deadly Tornadoes Sweep Dallas Area
BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Eleven people are dead after tornadoes sweep through the Dallas area over the weekend.
Thousands of people took cover in the storm's path, including Orioles Manager Buck Showalter, who owns a home in the Dallas region.
WJZ's Meghan McCorkell has more.
"All I could do is run to the closet and pray, I just can't get that sound out of my head. It done something to me," said one survivor.
It's a sound Orioles manager Buck Showalter knows as well.
"I think the sound is what gets you more than anything," he said.
Showalter and his wife split their time between Baltimore and their home near Dallas.
As the storms moved through Dallas the two, along with their son and three dogs took cover.
"Those things are so unpredictable and can go any direction. So we huddled up in our closet so to speak with the most walls between us and outside," he said.
Showalter tells WJZ he wasn't taking any chances with one tornado coming within miles of his home.
"You're never completely prepared, but we've learned to take the siren very seriously here. They were going off everywhere," said Showalter.
He says he's just grateful that he and his family are okay and his thoughts are with all of those affected.
Showalter says he hasn't seen any of the damage firsthand but he has seen the pictures.
Hundreds of building sustained serious damage throughout the Dallas area in the storms.
