Oprah Winfrey Appears On CBS & Opens Up About Life After Her Talk Show
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The queen of daytime talk, television icon and Oscar nominee. Oprah Winfrey appeared on the CBS Morning Show Monday. She talked candidly about the joys and pitfalls of starting her own network.
As Gigi Barnett reports, Winfrey has no plan to quit.
After 25 years on daytime TV, the queen of talk Oprah Winfrey opened up about her new life and new network on the CBS Morning Show.
Winfrey told hosts Charlie Rose and her best friend Gayle King that the OWN Cable Network, which struggles to lure viewers and recently cut 30 staffers to save money, is still in the building phase.
"If I knew then what I knew now, I might have made some different choices. I would say if I were writing a book about it, I would call the book '101 Mistakes,'" Winfrey said.
One big mistake was launching the network while she still had her talk show.
"It is like having the wedding when you know you're not ready. And you're walking down the aisle and you're saying, 'I don't know if we should be walking down the aisle. Maybe we should have postponed this,'" she said.
But Winfrey says she received some valuable advice from many Hollywood insiders, including "Saturday Night Live" creator Lorne Michaels.
"He said nobody wants to see you come off of 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' of all those 25 years of success and step right into the network business. You have to pay your dues," Winfrey said.
Winfrey is in New York this week promoting her lifeclass tour.
The WJZ alum says even with the recent difficulties her network has had, she won't quit.
"Because I'm a female who is African-American who has been so blessed in this world, there will never be a time to quit. I will die in the midst of doing what I love to do and that is using my voice and using my life to try to inspire other people to use theirs," Winfrey said.
Winfrey said starting a new network was similar to starting her school for girls in South Africa. Students celebrated the first graduating class earlier this year.
