Opposition To Frederick Incinerator Is Heated
FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- The rhetoric is running hot ahead of a Maryland Department of the Environment hearing on a proposed waste-to-energy incinerator near Frederick.
The hearing Wednesday night concerns plans by the Northeast Maryland Waste Disposal Authority for smokestack emissions, water discharge and ash disposal. State regulators have given preliminary approval to the permit applications.
Project proponents include a majority of the Frederick County Commissioners. They say the incinerator would save landfill space while generating electricity.
Opponents say the $386 million project would pollute the air and water, and obstruct views from the nearby Monocacy National Battlefield.
Carroll County is considering rescinding its agreement to send trash to the incinerator and cover 40 percent of the project costs. That would force Frederick County to find another partner or scale back the project.
