Many Volunteer To Mark MLK Holiday
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- While Monday was a day off for a lot of people, some used it to do a little good. It's called National Give Back Day and Alex DeMetrick foundvolunteers in Baltimore doing just that.
Students had the day off for the Martin Luther King holiday at Mary Rodman Elementary School, so volunteers filled the hallway. Most came from Baltimore-area Allstate Insurance agencies. The big job: paint almost 500 lockers.
"We were hoping to get at least 50 volunteers and I think we'll have about 60," said Debbie Pickford.
The idea of giving something back to society on the King holiday has been growing in recent years.
"I grew up in Baltimore so I love coming around the area," said Leah Johnson. "Very rewarding."
Cleaning out the school's auditorium was also on the to do list. Fifteen servicemen and women from Fort Meade pitched in.
"They told us about the volunteer opportunity," said Trevor Jones, who's in the Air Force. "I jumped right on it."
"The resources that Allstate's providing is wonderful," said principal Michele Broom.
Allstate Insurance is volunteering in more than just Baltimore. The company says it is participating in projects in all 50 states.
