O'Malley Helps Welcome New Schools Superintendent
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley is helping welcome the next state superintendent of schools.
O'Malley on Tuesday appeared a state school board meeting, which was also attended by Delaware Secretary of Education Lillian Lowery. The Baltimore Sun reports that Lowery, who will start her new job July 1, did not participate in discussion at the meeting. O'Malley encouraged board members to work harder on preparing principals and providing vocational training to students.
Lowery has been Delaware's secretary of education since 2009. She is known for facilitating a broad-based statewide strategic planning and grant application process that resulted in Delaware's selection as the first state to be awarded the federal Race to the Top grant.
She will replace interim State Superintendent Bernard Sadusky, who has served in the post since July.
