O'Malley For President In 2016? Could Be.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- Climbing the ladder. A political think tank is talking up Martin O'Malley as a 2016 presidential candidate.

Political reporter Pat Warren reports the idea may have some foundation in truth.

Governor O'Malley is making the network rounds promoting the Obama agenda as chair of the Democratic Governors Association. He gained a national spotlight for shepherding same-sex marriage through the General Assembly and signing the bill into law. Now he's billed as a hot prospect to succeed President Obama in the 2016 presidential election at a national press briefing on Friday.

"It is a sign that he's on the national radar now. He's been recognized," said Matthew Crenson, political analyst.

A spokesperson for the governor says it's all being made too much of and that this latest foray into national recognition is because he leads the Democratic Governors Association and led lawmakers to approve same-sex marriage.

"It's that 15 minutes of fame that everybody has. If he's going to be considered a serious candidate for president, he's going to have to be making appearances again and again and again," said Crenson.

O'Malley appears at the Inside Politics with Bill Schneider press breakfast in Washington Friday morning.
