O'Malley Donates Contributions From Thompson
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley has given away the money donated to his campaign by a businessman tied to a federal probe of District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray's campaign.
O'Malley spokesman Rick Abbruzzese tells The Washington Post the Democratic governor has donated $38,000 to a fund for veterans. That's the amount that was contributed to O'Malley's 2010 campaign by Jeffrey Thompson, his business entities and his associate Eugenia "Jeanne" Clarke Harris.
Harris pleaded guilty in federal court last week to helping facilitate a $650,000 "shadow campaign" for the district's mayor and conspiring to make straw donations. Although Thompson has not been charged, he is suspected of being the source of the illicit funds.
President Barack Obama has also given back $10,000 in contributions from Thompson.
