2 Tornadoes Confirmed In Western Md.
MAUGANSVILLE, Md. (WJZ) -- The National Weather Service is confirming that two tornadoes touched down in western Maryland.
One happened near Hagerstown Tuesday. The tornado did plenty of damage before dissipating.
Andrea Fujii reports residents just outside Hagerstown are cleaning up the damage from the tornado that was caught on tape.
"And a terrible noise. It was coming, exactly like between these two houses. It was going down completely and started spinning," said Vasily Seredich, tornado witness.
It was just after 8 p.m. Tuesday in Maugansville, Washington County.
Seredich crowded his family into the basement as he watched a tornado head right for his house.
Other neighbors were also forced to take cover.
"You could actually see it pulling the shingles, siding and tree branches and bushes up into it," said Tim White.
"My son, we all play jokes on each other. He's like 'Really?' So I screamed again, 'Get in the basement now,'" said Kim Wallech-White, tornado witness.
The National Weather Service confirms the EF-1 tornado was on the ground for a little more than two miles.
Several homes were damaged, including one that's 200-years-old.
"It's just sort of sinking in that we're kind of, we're not really homeless, there it is. We just can't go into it," said Joyce Randolph, homeowner.
As the cleanup continues Thursday, it's neighbor helping neighbor.
"I'm really grateful for all the help I've had. It shows the goodness of people, still grateful for that," said one man.
Despite all that damage, there were no injuries.
An EF-1 tornado packs winds between 86 and 110 miles per hour.
A second tornado was also confirmed. The weather service says an EF-0 tornado, with maximum wind speeds of 75 mph, touched down that same night near the Frederick County town of Wolfsville.
