Suspect Dead After Officer Involved-Shooting At Cromwell Light Rail Station
GLEN BURNIE, Md. (WJZ) -- A deadly shooting involves an MTA officer and a woman at a light rail station.
Monique Griego has the latest from Anne Arundel County Police, who are handling the investigation.
That officer is still in the hospital recovering from her injuries. According to police, the suspect had tried to strangle her before being shot.
Just after 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Anne Arundel County Police swarm the Cromwell light rail station moments after a shooting involving an MTA officer.
"Our officers arrived and determined a female suspect had been shot by a female police officer," said Lt. T.J. Smith, Anne Arundel County Police.
Smith says the situation started with two people flagging down the officer for help because of a disturbance involving the alleged suspect. Investigators say the officer responded, and once she got close enough:
"The female suspect assaulted her, tried to choke her. Several people who were in the area actually tried to break up this altercation. They were unable to break up the altercation," said Smith.
That's when Officer Tracy Turpin shot the suspect in the leg. Angela Randolph, 38, was taken to the hospital, where she later died. Turpin was also taken in for treatment, but is expected to be OK.
Smith says, in this case, Randolph used her hands as a weapon.
"She tried to choke somebody. You get choked, you can die from getting choked," Smith said.
Police are still looking into what sparked the initial disturbance and also why they say Randolph reacted so violently.
"When you have people going in trying to pull the suspect off the officer, that kind of shows you the type of situation the officer's in," said Smith. "Deadly force is a last resort. Our goal is to make it home at the end of the night."
While part of the Park and Ride is closed, the light rail is still open in that area.
