Obama To Host Mayors, Visit Plant In N.Y.
WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama hosts a White House reception Friday for mayors attending the winter meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
Later, Obama will travel to upstate New York to visit the birthplace of General Electric. He'll tour the Schenectady site with GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt and talk about the importance of growing the economy and making the United States more competitive by investing in jobs, innovation and clean energy.
Immelt is joining the president for another reason: Obama is appointing Immelt as the head of a new presidential board, the President's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness. The council is replacing the Economic Recovery Advisory Board and, as its name suggests, focusing on increasing employment.
In the evening, the president will attend the Democratic Issues Conference in Cambridge, Md.
