Obama Budget Spares Washington From Deep Cuts
WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama's proposed budget protects several D.C. programs that city leaders call critical -- but Republicans are threatening to cut spending in some areas, including Metro.
The budget keeps the federal government's commitment to supply Metro with $150 million to pay for upgrades.
Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, who represents the district in Congress, says she's "pleased that the president spared the district from the harshest cuts."
But the Republican majority in the House is looking to D.C. for some savings as it tries to deal with a record federal deficit. A resolution unveiled by House Republicans Friday night would cut federal payments to the district by nearly $80 million and slash Metro funding by $150 million over the next eight months.
