Northwestern Tops Maryland 8-7 For Lacrosse Title
STONY BROOK, N.Y. (AP) -- Northwestern won its sixth NCAA women's lacrosse championship in seven years Sunday, getting four goals from Shannon Smith, including the game-winner with 4:36 remaining, in an 8-7 victory over top-ranked Maryland.
Freshman Kara Mupo added two goals for the Wildcats, who avenged last year's 13-11 loss to Maryland and overcame an early three-goal deficit.
Erin Fitzgerald and Jessica Russo also scored for the Wildcats (21-2), who advanced to the championship with Friday's 11-10 victory over North Carolina.
Katie Schwarzmann scored with 85 seconds remaining for the Terrapins (21-2), who were trying to repeat for the first time since winning a record seven straight championships from 1995-2001.
Freshman Beth Glaros scored four goals in the first half, including three in a 94-second span for Maryland, which overcame a six-goal deficit in last year's championship victory.
