Dozens Of Kids 'Shop With A Cop' For The Holidays
SEVERN, Md. (WJZ) -- Sometimes, you need a little help getting your holiday shopping lists done. For some children in Anne Arundel County, their shopping was done in a day.
Gigi Barnett reports thanks to some men and women in blue, the kids got a chance to "Shop with a Cop" at a Wal-Mart in Severn.
There are o parking lot jams when you have a police escort during the holiday shopping season.
"A hundred dollars is in my back pocket for you guys," an officer said.
For 70 kids, there are no worries about paying for gifts either, thanks to the "Shop with a Cop" program with Anne Arundel County officers this weekend.
"I got stuff for my dog, my mom. I got everything everybody wanted," Skyler Lane said.
This is the 10-year-old's second year getting a personal police escort. His gifts are in the bag and Lane is keeping a tight lip about who gets what.
"I can't tell you because my family watches the news," he said.
All that shopping sure works up an appetite. When the mission is finished, the kids and cops are treated to lunch at a local restaurant.
It's a chance to relax, wrap the gifts and build relationships that last after the holidays.
"If they see us for who we really are, moms and dads and brothers and sisters and sons and daughters at a time like this, it will make future interactions with law enforcement that much better," said Chief Kevin Davis, Anne Arundel County Police.
The Optimist Club organized the shopping spree with Wal-Mart and Outback restaurants. In all, 70 kids shopped with cops -- each one selected by a teacher to attend.
