No. 7 Seed Johns Hopkins Defeats Stony Brook 19-9
BALTIMORE, Md. (AP) -- Brandon Benn scored five goals as seventh-seeded Johns Hopkins breezed to a 19-9 win over Stony Brook in the opening round of the NCAA men's lacrosse tournament Sunday.
Chris Boland also had three goals and four assists and Zach Palmer added another three goals for the Blue Jays (12-3), who will face the winner of Sunday night's game between Maryland and seventh-seeded Lehigh at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis.
Matt Bellando had three goals and Russ Bonanno scored twice for the Seawolves (7-10), who along with Canisius (6-8), were the only two teams with losing records to make the tournament.
Johns Hopkins opened a 7-1 lead at the end of the first quarter thanks to Boland's three goals and two from John Ranagan. The Blue Jays, who never trailed, won all nine faceoffs and outshot Stony Brook 17-3 in the opening period.
Bonanno eventually cut the lead to 7-4 with 7:15 left in the half. The Seawolves, however, never got any closer. Palmer, Benn and Wells Stanwick scored in the opening four minutes of the fourth quarter to increase the lead to 18-7.
