9 Indicted In Escape From Western Md. Jail
OAKLAND, Md. (AP) -- The Garrett County state's attorney says a grand jury has indicted nine people on charges of conspiring in the January escape of a District of Columbia man from the county jail in Oakland.
Lisa Thayer Welch said Monday the defendants include escapee Deandre Kelly, 29, who remains at large, and eight alleged co-conspirators, mostly from Maryland and Virginia.
State police arrested Kelly on drug, weapon and traffic charges on Jan. 22 after a traffic stop on Interstate 68 near Friendsville. He was also wanted by federal authorities in connection with drug charges in Washington.
Police say Kelly escaped from the jail a day later. He allegedly assaulted two correctional officers after showing them what appeared to be handgun and forcing them to open a holding cell.
