NHL: It Is A Great Time To Be A Caps Fan
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The Washington Capitals have played in a Stanley Cup Final, won a Presidents' Trophy, and have been a consistent contender during the Alex Ovechkin era.
But the teams have always found a way to have their seasons end in heartbreak for fans, but this season feels different.
With their 4-2 win over the Minnesota Wild, the Capitals improved their record to a league-best 40-9-4.
They are not only in the driver's seat to win their second Presidents' Trophy in franchise history, they are on a pace to win it by a larger margin than any team in nearly two decades. The Capitals' current record puts them on a pace for 129 points this season, which is 18 points above the runner-up. They are the first team in NHL history to ever win 40 of their first 53 games.
The current team is projected to shatter the records of the 2009-10 team, which was perhaps the best team the Capitals organization has had.
"What makes this team so much different than other Capitals teams from recent years is the simple fact that it is so much deeper and has so much more balance not only in terms of the lineup, but also the style of play. It doesn't have the obvious flaws that past teams have had, whether due to the construction of the roster or the man standing behind the bench pushing all of the buttons," said CBS Sports writer Adam Gretz.
So, based on the numbers, it looks like the Caps are the best team in the NHL at the moment.
