New Wal-Mart Opens In Randallstown
RANDALLSTOWN, Md. (WJZ)—For the past 30 years, politicians and residents have been trying to breathe new life into the Liberty Road corridor outside of the Beltway.
Now, as Mike Schuh reports, the world's largest retailer is welcomed as a step in the right direction.
The parking lot is full. Shoppers fill every available spot. Others circle around waiting for the opening of the new Wal-Mart in Randallstown.
"I was waiting for this store to open," said Arnett Duckett, Randallstown.
It was built on a failed strip mall. The store has a bit of everything from a grocery to eyeglasses.
It took five weeks to fill up with 100,000 different items.
"The community has reached out to us, wanting what we're bringing here," said Jim Hiteshue.
Shawn McNeil got a new TV for her nearby beauty shop.
"I think it's going to enhance the area and everyone will benefit," McNeil said.
The store is located at Liberty and Benbrook roads, an area that could use some help.
Folks around here hope this extra traffic draws in even more business to the area.
"A lot of companies will come. A lot of stores will come. That's what they're hoping for, and I'm praying for it," Duckett said.
And another thing...
"Jobs, jobs," Duckett continued. "Basically, jobs. People need jobs."
About 350 people work here, and roughly half are full-time.
That store is near an extension of a road that will eventually connect Liberty Road and Owings Mills.
