New Poll Shows Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton In A Dead Heat
WASHINGTON (WJZ) -- Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump on an even playing field. A new CBS-New York Times Poll hints at a presidential race to the wire. WJZ's Pat Warren has the results.
In Maryland, both candidates get support just for showing up -- Donald Trump on the Eastern Shore, and Hillary Clinton in Baltimore.
Just days ahead of the Republican National Convention, our CBS Poll shows Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are in a dead heat, tied at 40 percent.
Last Month, Clinton polled six points ahead of Trump, 43 to 37 percent, and her lead has been consistently shrinking. In April, she led by ten points.
Asked if their minds are made up, there appears to be little doubt. Trump supporters are 90 percent "yes," and 88 percent of Clinton supporters have made up their minds.
"I definitely have a candidate in mind and I will be supporting that candidate and feel pretty strongly about it. Hell or high water," said Elizabeth Pope, voter.
The candidates share this quality -- the majority of voters polled don't see either of them as honest or trustworthy -- Clinton with 67 percent, and Trump with 62 percent saying "no."
The CBS Poll shows only half of voters think Clinton is prepared for the job, but that's 20 points ahead of Trump.
So now that the conventions are upon us, are voters looking forward to the rest of the campaign? Sixty-one percent say "no."
Nearly 70 percent of voters say the vice presidential candidate is also important.
