Neighbor Indicted In 2008 Hagerstown Slaying

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- A Hagerstown man is charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of a former neighbor found dead in her home nearly two years ago.

Washington County Assistant State's Attorney Gina Cirincion said Thursday that forensic evidence puts Darrol Sands, 43, at the scene.

Sands has pleaded not guilty to killing Carol Brown, 22.

The single mother of two was found dead on the second floor of a house in the city's West End in April 2008.

Sands' public defenders didn't immediately return a call from The Associated Press.

Sands told a judge during a court hearing Thursday that he has been treated for schizophrenia.

He is serving a 10-year sentence for crack cocaine distribution in an unrelated case.
