Police Arrest North Carolina Man In Mount Vernon Photographer's Murder
BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- Baltimore City police are making strides in solving the murder of a Mount Vernon photographer. On Thursday, they announced the arrest of a 25-year-old man from North Carolina.
Rochelle Ritchie has more on the suspect in custody.
The arrest comes just weeks after a double shooting on Aug. 10 in front of a bed and breakfast. Police say the man who fired the fatal shots has been charged with first-degree murder, assault and robbery.
Baltimore City police made an announcement family and friends of Larry Peterson and Alex Ulrich have waited weeks to hear.
"We made an arrest, got an arrest warrant for the suspect," Det. Josh Ellsworth of the Baltimore Police Department said.
Ulrich was tragically shot and killed after police say Quinton Bass, 25, attempted to rob him and Peterson on East Chase Street.
"During that attempted robbery, Quinton Bass began shooting at both of the individuals, both of the shooting victims, fatally wounding Alex and critically wounding Larry," Lt. Col. Garnell Green said.
Bass is no stranger to such violence. Police say he committed multiple violent crimes, including robbery and assault, in North Carolina.
Hundreds gathered after the murder to remember Ulrich, 40, and pray for a speedy recovery for Peterson.
"Just really felt it was important to come out here and to show my support to the family," Cami Walker, a friend, said.
"The police department knows what they're doing," Mary Ulrich, Alex Ulrich's mother, said. "We don't want this to happen to anybody else."
Baltimore City police arrested Bass in Mount Vernon Park on an alcohol violation. They had no idea he was a suspect in a murder.
"They were in the right community doing the right type of work which created the lead which led to the information that allowed Josh Ellsworth to close the case," Deputy Police Commissioner John Skinner said.
Police say extra foot patrols were added in the Mount Vernon area after a rash of robberies.
The community is feeling a bit safer.
"That's definitely reassuring to hear there's a quick turnaround on that," DJ Dergino, a Mount Vernon resident, said.
Police say the investigation isn't over just yet. The search for more suspects continues as unanswered questions remain.
Police are still looking into whether Bass is responsible for other robberies in the area.
Ulrich's family lives in Washington County. They tell WJZ they are thankful for a quick arrest.
