Navy Report: Rock Island Hazing Involved Exercise
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- A Navy report says a commanding officer in Illinois was removed from the job after humiliating three reservists in front of other sailors.
Lt. Cmdr. Jack O'Neill was in charge of Navy Operational Support Center Rock Island until March 19.
An investigative report released by Navy Reserve Forces Command in Norfolk says O'Neill was upset that several sailors missed physical training during a drill weekend. He ordered those sailors to perform a body-building exercise in front of others, with each saying "I do what I want" after each repetition.
The report was obtained by The Associated Press through the Freedom of Information Act.
The sailors said they were embarrassed and O'Neill later apologized. The Navy considers the incident hazing. It happened weeks after a hazing prevention office was created.
