Navy Pulls Away Late, Beats Longwood 87-70
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Jordan Sugars scored 20 points and J.J. Avila added 19 to lead Navy to an 87-70 victory over Longwood on Tuesday night.
The Midshipmen (5-11) trailed 45-34 with 18:01 remaining in the game, but went on a 26-15 run to tie it at 60 with 8:14 to go. But they were just getting started.
Navy -- led by 11 points from Sugars -- outscored the Lancers 27-10 the rest of the way as Longwood committed six turnovers and was whistled for a technical foul in the final 8 minutes.
The Lancers (5-13) led 38-30 at halftime after shooting 50 percent from the floor (14 of 28) in the opening half, including 6 of 14 from 3-point range (42.9 percent).
Antwan Carter led all scorers with 28, Aaron Mitchell added 13 points and 10 rebounds and Durann Neil chipped in 13 points for Longwood.
Navy shot just 27.3 percent (9 of 33) in the first, including 1 of 15 from beyond the arc (6.7 percent).
