Navy Names 2 New Combat Ships Milwaukee & Detroit
DETROIT (AP) -- The U.S. Navy has announced that two new combat ships being built in Wisconsin will be named the USS Milwaukee and the USS Detroit.
The announcement was made Friday by Navy Secretary Ray Mabus.
Congress last year approved the Navy's plan to buy 20 advanced combat ships, including 10 from Marinette Marine Corp. in Marinette, Wis., which is located on the Wisconsin-Michigan border.
The 378-foot-long USS Milwaukee and USS Detroit will be built by a team led by Bethesda, Md.-based Lockheed Martin Corp.
