Navy Defeats George Washington 64-57
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Jordan Sugars scored 20 points in his first game back from a hand injury to lead Navy to a 64-57 victory over George Washington in the middle game of Sunday's BB&T Classic.
O.J. Avworo added 10 points for the Midshipmen (4-6) in their third win in four games and their first win at the event, a tripleheader featuring mostly area teams, since 2005.
David Pellom scored a career-high tying 11 points and Bryan Bynes also scored 11 points for the Colonials (2-5), which have lost four straight after beginning the season 2-1. Navy shot 44 percent from 3-point range while holding George Washington to just 14 percent from beyond the arc.
Sugars hit four of his eight 3-point attempts, including two during a second-half stretch where Navy outscored GW 16-5 to pull out to a 59-45 lead.
The junior had missed Navy's last three games after suffering a laceration to his left, non-shooting hand. But George Washington closed it to 62-57 on Bynes' late 3-pointer after the Midshipmen sent the Colonials to the free-throw line five times down the stretch, where they hit 7 of 10 foul shots. The Colonials, which beat Navy 81-69 in the same event last December, suffered their first loss against the Midshipmen since Valentine's Day of 1980.
Before last year's meeting, the series, which George now leads 21-20, had been dormant since 1983. Meanwhile, Navy registered the first BB&T Classic victory for a Patriot League team since Bucknell defeated George Washington in 2006.
