Naval Academy Friends, Classmates Mourn The Loss Of Midshipman Killed In Amtrak Derailment
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- The Naval Academy is mourning the loss of Justin Zemser, a midshipman killed on board Amtrak train no. 188 which derailed in Philadelphia on Tuesday night.
Zemser was on leave and headed home to Rockaway Beach, NY when the train derailed.
"My wife, Lynda, and I join the Brigade, staff and faculty in mourning the loss of Midshipman Justin Zemser," said Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Adm. Walter "Ted" Carter. "Justin was a talented, highly respected young man with a tremendously bright future. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the Zemser family, and our extended USNA family, during this very difficult time."
Zemser was a member of the 17th Company, an English major and honors student. He was a member of the Navy Sprint Football team, Jewish Midshipman Club and the Semper Fi Society.
In an interview with WJZ's Rick Ritter, the midshipman's mom Susan Zemser said her son had dreams of becoming a Navy Seal.
"I know my son was well known, and he'll be in everybody's heart forever," she said.
In Annapolis Wednesday, a solemn atmosphere around Navy's campus. Teachers–in awe.
"It's just tragic. These kids are going away on their breaks, and the guys that have gone through a couple years so far have really worked hard, and it's sad to see something like this happen," said Deke Johnson, teacher at the Naval Academy.
The Naval Academy has offered grief counselors to friends and classmates of Zemser as well as staff.
