National Gallery Of Art Opens Major Gauguin Show
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The National Gallery of Art in Washington is showing major works by the French artist Paul Gauguin -- the first major U.S. exhibition of his works in about 20 years.
The exhibit, "Gauguin: Maker of Myth," opening Sunday was organized with the Tate Modern in London where it has been on view since September. It includes nearly 120 works, including paintings, drawings and sculptures.
Curators attempt to show Gauguin as a storyteller from his mid-19th century travels to Tahiti. The exhibit contains some of his most iconic work, such as "Vision of the Sermon" and "Christ in the Garden of Olives."
The gallery says some works are in the United States for the first time, including "Woman with Mango Fruits," which Gauguin carved and painted in 1889.
The exhibit is open through June 5.
