National Cathedral Reopens With Consecration
WASHINGTON (AP) -- A new bishop has been consecrated at the Washington National Cathedral -- the first event at the cathedral since it was damaged by an earthquake in August.
The consecration of the Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde as the ninth Episcopal Bishop of Washington took place Saturday morning. Budde is the first woman to serve in that role.
On Sunday, the cathedral will open its doors for its first public worship service since the 5.8-magnitude quake, which caused stonework to fall off its towers and cracks to form in parts of the building. Repairs are expected to take years and cost at least $15 million.
The cathedral will continue to celebrate the reopening with events throughout next week.
