20-Year-Old Towson University Student Killed In Overnight Hit-And-Run
TOWSON, Md. (WJZ) — Police are asking drivers to help them find a truck involved in a hit and run Saturday night that killed a 20-year-old Towson University student.
Condolences for Mzi Ncube have been posted all over social media by the dozens.
Many reflecting on memories, some in shock and others saying he doesn't deserve this.
It was on a pitch-black stretch of North Charles Street Saturday where a hit and run crash claimed 20-year-old Mzimazisi Ncube's life.
Ncube, was crossing the road around 10:30 p.m. when police said a 2007-2019 Toyota Tundra or Sequoia hit him on the driver's side of the truck and continued to flee the scene northbound on North Charles Street.
The junior accounting major was knocked to the ground and then he was hit a second time by a Mercedes. The driver stopped at the scene and called 911. But it was too late.
"That first vehicle, though, never stopped. That vehicle fled the scene. And that's the vehicle that we need help finding," said Baltimore County spokeswoman Ofc. Jennifer Peach.
Ncube was taken to an area hospital where was pronounced dead.
Based on evidence found at the scene, police are looking for a Toyota Sequoia or Tundra with a broken left mirror and possible front damage on the drivers side.
One of four siblings, the Ncube family tells WJZ they are deeply saddened by his death.
"As a family we are deeply saddened by the death of Mzimazisi Ncube, beloved son of Allan and Ollie, and brother to Zolani, Ziphe, Nomazwe and Zandile," Ncube's family said in a statement.
"Mzi was known for his charisma, infectious sense of humor, caring attitude and affable smile," the family said.
Towson University issued a statement Monday about Mzi's death:
The Towson University community grieves with the family and loved ones of Mzimazisi Ncube and we mourn this tragic loss of young life. We urge the surrounding community to assist Baltimore County Police in their investigation of this horrific accident.
Our hearts are broken for his Greek life family, his fellow mentors in the Center for Student Diversity, as well as the student philanthropy volunteers he worked alongside while at TU.
The TU Counseling Center is available to meet with campus members needing support during this difficult time.
Now police are calling on drivers to help solve his killing.
"We need help from the public. Because they're driving around all the time. We need people to open in their eyes and look around for a Toyota Tundra or Toyota Sequoia that is missing this drivers side mirror piece," Peach said.
The search for a killer on Baltimore County roads as a family plans a funeral for a college student.
The Baltimore County Crash Investigation Team is continuing to investigate the incident.
