'My Beloved World:' Justice Sonia Sotomayor Shares Her Journey With Baltimore
BALTIMORE (WJZ)—U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor visited Baltimore on Thursday, giving several hundred people a chance to hear about the high court and the journey to get there.
Mary Bubala reports the first Hispanic appointed to the high court received a standing ovation at the Enoch Pratt Free Library.
"I see all these people coming to wait to be with me. I think to myself 'This is like a dream. I don't want to wake up,'" Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor said.
Justice Sotomayor talked with the crowd about her incredible journey to the high court, including her battle with juvenile diabetes, poverty and a father who was an alcoholic.
It's all chronicled in her new memoir, "My Beloved World." Thursday night she read passages to the crowd.
The justice also got off the stage and walked through the audience to better connect.
"This great country of ours is even greater when we can take notice of how similar all of us are," Sotomayor said.
Sotomayor is the third woman ever to serve on the Supreme Court.
"She's a wonderful person, and I thought it would be a historic moment for me," said Josephine Donley.
"I am encouraged and inspired by the justice's message and her determination to make her life and what she went through," said Charles Michael Johnson.
Sotomayor was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2009.
