Murder Suspect Charged In Second Slaying
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. (AP) -- A murder suspect charged Thursday in a second killing in south-central Pennsylvania told police he smoked crack cocaine with a teenager before he bludgeoned her to death with a board more than 15 years ago.
Jeffrey Miles, who was arraigned on a criminal homicide charge in Waynesboro District Court, admitted killing Angie Daley of Waynesboro, who was 17 when she disappeared in 1995, according to a state police affidavit.
Miles, 49, led Pennsylvania state troopers to Daley's remains in a wooded area off state Route 16 in Waynecastle during a 2010 investigation that resulted in him being charged in the fatal stabbing of Kristy Hoke, 29, a mother of three who lived in a mobile-home park in nearby Hagerstown.
Miles faces the death penalty in the Hoke case, which is scheduled to go to trial early next year, his court-appointed lawyer, Eric Weisbrod, said Thursday. Weisbrod said he has not been appointed to represent Miles in the Daley case.
Franklin County District Attorney Matthew Fogal said his office deferred filing charges in the Daley case until DNA tests recently affirmed the identification of the remains found in 2010, The Herald-Mail in Hagerstown reported.
It was unclear what brought Miles and Daley together. Fogal did not return two telephone messages from The Associated Press seeking comment.
Trooper Aaron Martin said in his affidavit that Miles referred to the 1995 killing in a notebook investigators obtained during the Hoke investigation. Martin mentioned the entry to Miles, showed him Daley's picture and asked him to reveal where her body was "to give Daley's parents closure."
After locating the remains, investigators questioned Miles about events leading up to the slaying.
"Miles then related that Daley wanted to smoke some crack. Miles related that they had some. Miles related that Daley wanted to smoke more. Miles related that he got a need to kill. He related that Daley crossed his path," Martin said in the affidavit.
Martin said Miles "smacked her in the head" with a 2-by-4-inch board, put her in the trunk of his car and drove to the spot where he disposed of the body.
"When he got there, he opened the trunk and Daley popped up. She said, `Please don't kill me.' Miles related that he hit her in the head again with the board two more times," the affidavit said.
Miles is being held without bail at Franklin County Jail in Chambersburg.
