Munch's 'The Scream' Adorns Norway Christmas Tree In D.C.
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Norway's gift to the people of Washington for Christmas is sure to be a "scream."
The Embassy of Norway is unveiling a Christmas tree Tuesday at Union Station for the 16th year. This year's tree is decorated with ornaments depicting Edvard Munch's "The Scream" to mark the 150th anniversary of the Norwegian artist's birth.
A lighting is planned for Tuesday evening. Dozens of ornaments depicting "The Scream" are interspersed with Norwegian and American flags on the tree.
The tree will be on display through December. It's considered a symbol of friendship between Norway and the United States and symbolizes Norway's gratitude for help during and after World War II.
Munch's "The Scream" sold last year for a then-record $120 million and was the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction.
