More Than 100 Dogs Rescued From Fire

HUNTINGTOWN, Md. (WJZ) --More than 100 dogs are pulled from a burning home in Calvert County.

Mary Bubala reports that 50 firefighters helped in the rescue, but despite the effort, several dogs died.

Flames consumed the home of a dog breeder and kennel on Neptune Drive in Huntingtown, Md. in Calvert County.

Trapped inside were more than 100 dogs.

"I was quite concerned because for a time I didn't hear any dogs at all barking, and I thought maybe they had been overcome by smoke," said neighbor Jane Lawry-Walsh.

Firefighters worked non-stop to pull dog after dog from the flames.

"Firefighters made a quick entry and made a quick knockdown on the fire," said Chief Jonathan Riffe, Calvert Co. Fire Dept. "In about five minutes, [they] rescued over 100 animals."

Four dogs died in the fire. The surviving dogs were put in warm cars as the owners searched for temporary homes.

"We breed and show dogs," said Terry Anthon, kennel owner. "The American Kennel Club was here on Thursday. They inspected us and everything was fine."

Anthon's fear: "We could have not woken up, and then there would have been no one to take care of the dogs," he said.

Firefighters are investigating what started the fire.
