Montgomery Police Step Up Anti-Littering Efforts
ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) -- Police in Montgomery County are stepping up efforts to crack down on littering.
The department says it'll be participating in an anti-littering campaign run by the Alice Ferguson Foundation and the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. It runs through May 7.
Police say they'll be extra vigilant during the campaign in cracking down on litter violations.
Under Maryland law, littering of items under 100 pounds is a misdemeanor and punishable by up to 30 days in jail or a $1,500 fine. The fines and penalties increase as the amount of litter goes up.
Police are encouraging the public to report littering violations by calling 301-279-8000.
