Miracle Ties Designed By Hopkins Children's Center Patients On Sale
BALTIMORE (WJZ) — If you want to do something nice this holiday season, there's no better way than buying a Miracle Tie. It's a partnership between the Johns Hopkins Children's Center and JoS. A. Bank.
Ron Matz has more on a Baltimore tradition where the center's young patients are the stars.
The Miracle Ties are on sale now at JoS. A. Bank. They're designed by the kids who are patients at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center.
"This is the holiday season. We're all excited every year when we get to see the new designs," said Dr. George Dover, Johns Hopkins Children's Center chairman. "It seems like yesterday we started this. This has been a wonderful partnership between Johns Hopkins and JoS. A. Bank. This is our 16th year. It shows off the miracles, the kids and the drawings that they do."
Lilah Sidle's snowman tie was inspired by something many take for granted.
"I did a snowman tie because the day before I made the tie I made a snowman and I don't get to go out in the snow that often so it was really exciting for me," she said.
It's a special time of year for the children and for Baltimore.
"We raise money for the Children's Center. All the money raised comes directly to Hopkins. We've raised over $850,000. That's a lot of ties. They've been bought predominantly in Baltimore, but you can get them online all over the country. But it's a real Baltimore tradition," Dover said.
Every tie has a story.
"This means a lot to the people at Hopkins," said Dover. "This tie has become a symbol of the community at Hopkins, coming together for the kids. The nurses, the respiratory therapists and the doctors at Hopkins, when they see these ties they think about this wonderful community and the partnership that helps these kids. It's a special time of year."
Miracle Tie sales raised $50,000 last year, nearly $900,000 in 16 years.
"Every year I get so excited. I get emotional when I see the kids. The ties are available at all the local JoS. A. Bank stores, and if you're not local you can go online," said Ray Mays, JoS. A. Bank in Towson.
The ties help kids like 9-year-old Madison Hafetz who has an angel on her shoulder.
"I designed an angel because whenever I have a bad treatment I always pray to God and I always feel like he sends an angel to watch over me," Hafetz said. "It feels amazing to be selected and to see a lot of people wearing my tie. That's amazing."
The Miracle Ties are available at all JoS. A. Bank stores for $69.50.
"And 100 percent of the proceeds goes to the kids," Rays said. "That's what it's all about."
