Michael Phelps Takes Home 2 ESPY Awards
BALTIMORE (WJZ) — ESPN holds its annual ESPY Awards, celebrating the best in sports. And Baltimore is well represented.
Jessica Kartalija has a look at the honors for our hometown athletes.
Baltimore Orioles, football players and top swimming sensations all represented Charm City in ESPN's top honors.
Baltimore athletes make a big splash in Los Angeles.
"I'm honored to be here, hosting the ESPYs, the largest gathering of people wearing sunglasses indoors," said actor Jon Hamm.
The world's best athletes gathered at the Nokia Theater for ESPN's annual awards show.
"Congratulations to the Baltimore Ravens, who defeated the San Francisco 49ers to win the Super Bowl," Hamm said. "It was great to see Ray Lewis go out with a Super Bowl win on top with his final season. Very emotional win. Congratulations, sir."
Joe Flacco, Terrell Suggs and Torrey Smith were in attendance.
"Michael Phelps won four more gold medals, bringing his total to 16," said Hamm.
Baltimore Bullet, Michael Phelps, took home two ESPYs.
"And the fans have decided. The ESPY goes to... Michael Phelps."
Phelps also took home the ESPY for "Best Male U.S. Olympic Athlete."
"I'd also like to thank the big man, Ray. Thank you," Phelps said of Ray Lewis. "You've helped me out a lot over the last four years. And Ray was somebody who helped me really find the fire inside of me to come back and finish my career how I wanted to. So I appreciate that."
Baltimore Orioles All-Star Manny Machado also made an onstage appearance.
Baltimore's own swimmer Jessica Long took home "Best Female Athlete With A Disability" at the ESPYs.
In addition to being named "Best Male Olympic Athlete," Phelps also won an ESPY for "Best Record Breaking Performance."
