Meeting Set In Baltimore County Over School Budget
TOWSON, Md. (AP) -- The superintendent of public schools in Baltimore County is set to meet with the County Council about a proposed $1.3 billion budget that would eliminate nearly 200 teaching positions.
Most of the planned 196 reductions would come through attrition in the county's high schools.
The budget proposal takes effect July 1.
Superintendent Joe Hairston is scheduled to discuss at Tuesday's meeting whether he and the school board will reinstate the teaching positions.
Several council members say the school district should find other places in the budget to cut in order to save the teaching jobs.
Data from the 2009-10 school year show the school system has roughly 8,900 teachers and about 5,000 non-instructional staff.
