Md. Town Of Damascus Votes To Allow Alcohol Sales
DAMASCUS, Md. (AP) -- Restaurants in the Montgomery County town of Damascus are getting ready to sell wine and beer.
The Baltimore Sun reports the town of just over 15,000 voted this week to allow alcohol sales. Damascus had been one of the few dry towns left in Maryland, and voters decided against allowing alcohol sales in votes in 1933, 1976, 1984, 1992 and 1996.
This year the referendum question on alcohol was put on the ballot by the state's General Assembly.
The residents' vote allows restaurants to apply for a license to serve wine and beer, but only to customers that are seated. The vote leaves in effect a ban on the opening of bars and the sale of hard liquor.
