Md. Students, WSSC To Make Oyster Habitats
GERMANTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Students at a Germantown elementary school and staff at the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission are joining forces to help save Chesapeake Bay oysters.
The students and staff plan to make concrete reef balls Friday at Spark Matsunaga Elementary School. The balls are hollow and provide a space for oysters to latch onto and grow.
The WSSC works with the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishermen's Association to supply lessons, molds and other supplies needed to make the 120-pound reef balls.
In May, a group of students and a teacher from the school will watch as hundreds of reef balls are dropped into the Chesapeake Bay on the Memorial Stadium Oyster Reef north of Baltimore.
