First Lady Michelle Obama Plants Vegetable Garden With Students
WASHINGTON (WJZ) -- The first lady is not afraid of a little dirt. Michelle Obama hosted a White House garden harvest Tuesday afternoon.
As Linh Bui reports, she had a lot of help, including from a Maryland student.
In 2009, First Lady Michelle Obama planted a vegetable garden on the south lawn of the White House. Since then, she's used it as a tool to promote healthy eating.
First Lady Michelle Obama needed help for the annual fall harvest, and dozens of school children answered the call. They got their hands dirty in the White House garden, picking a variety of fruits and vegetables.
The kids learned about where food comes from and how to eat healthy.
"Everything was just dirt just a few months ago. And because the summer was so cool and wet and beautiful, everything is just bursting and it's just amazing over there," the first lady said.
Once the harvesting was done, there was a cooking lesson in the East Room. White House chefs worked with the students, who came from Arizona, California, Ohio and Washington, D.C. One student is from Chevy Chase.
Then, after a toast from the first lady, it was time to eat and enjoy the fruits of their labor.
The schools were selected for the event because they put a focus on teaching nutrition and health.
The first lady's "Let's Move" initiative encourages families and kids to eat healthier and exercise.
