Md. State Police Seek Driver In Fatal Hit-And-Run
GLEN BURNIE, Md. (WJZ)—State police are still searching for the driver who hit a man on I-97, carried him 200 feet on the hood of his car and kept driving.
Meghan McCorkell has more on this investigation.
One victim remains in critical condition at the hospital. Another man is dead. Now the search is on for the driver who killed him.
On I-97 North between Route 32 and Benfield Road, a bizarre crash brought traffic to a screeching halt just after 3 a.m. Police say the driver of a street sweeping truck--31-year-old Scott Olczak--lost control.
He hit a concrete barrier on the right side of the road, swerved across all lanes of traffic, crossed into the median and smashed into a guardrail.
The truck overturned, ejecting Olczak and his passenger, 50-year-old Wilmer Borgmann III, of Millersville.
Borgmann wound up in the southbound lanes, where a car hit him head-on and then took off.
"The passenger was probably standing, maybe back on his feet attempting to get out of the road but was unable to do so before he was struck," said Greg Shipley, Maryland State Police.
Investigators say the driver of that car had to have known they hit a person.
They believe Borgmann's body may have been stuck on the hood of the car until the driver stopped to remove it.
"The victim's body was found more than 200 feet from where the impact occurred," Shipley said.
That truck that was involved in the accident is owned by Mallary Power Washing in Crownsville. A woman who answered the phone at the company confirmed Borgmann was an employee.
Police don't have the exact description of the car that hit Borgmann but say it should have severe damage to the hood, windshield and the front grill.
Now they want that driver off the road.
State police did recover a windshield wiper from the suspect's car. They urge anyone with information to call investigators at 410-761-5130.
Police are not sure what caused the initial accident where the truck went off the road.
