Md.'s Antietam Battlefield Getting New Boss
SHARPSBURG, Md. (AP) -- The National Park Service has named a new superintendent of the Antietam National Battlefield near Sharpsburg.
The agency said Wednesday that Susan Trail will succeed John Howard, who retired last year as chief administrator of the Civil War site.
Trail has been superintendent of the Monocacy National Battlefield near Frederick for the past eight years. She was assistant superintendent at Antietam for five years before that.
She takes over at Antietam Nov. 21.
Trail says she's looking forward to working with park staff and supporters as they prepare for next September's 150th anniversary of the bloodiest day of the Civil War.
More than 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or declared missing at Antietam on Sept. 17, 1862.
