Md. Releases Bioscience Economic Impact Report

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A new report on the impact of biosciences on Maryland's economy has found that the industry has generated one-third of the state's job gains between 2002 and 2010.

The report by the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development was released Tuesday by Gov. Martin O'Malley at the Bio 2011 International Convention in Washington.

The report found that bioscience accounts for 6.5 percent of the state's gross domestic product. Maryland has more than 1,700 life sciences establishments in the private sector. That's the fifth highest concentration in the nation.

The report says the sector supported 71,600 jobs at federal agencies, higher education institutions and the private sector. Workers in the life sciences earned more than $91,000 a year, which is 76 percent more than the average Maryland wage earner.
