10-Year-Old Md. Girl Found Dead In Field; Person In Custody
PORT DEPOSIT, Md. (WJZ) -- A troubling story out of the small town of Port Deposit after a 10-year-old girl was found dead, and Maryland State Police suspect foul play.
Rochelle Ritchie has more on what's being investigated as a homicide.
Ten-year-old Kami Ring had her whole life ahead of her until Maryland State Police say she was found dead on Waibel Road.
"There are three people believed to live in the house where the young girl was staying. Two were alleged grandparents and another individual. All three were taken in for questioning," said Elena Russo, Maryland State Police.
Sky Eye Chopper 13 was over her grandparents' home. The little girl was last seen by family members on Sunday, when it was assumed she went to bed. The next morning, she was nowhere to be found and the police were called. An effort to find her is still evident on a stop sign.
The 10-year-old girl was found just 60 yards from her grandparents' home eight hours after she went missing.
"I have a 6-year-old grandchild that plays in my yard all the time, playing with the children. It's so sad," said neighbor Joan Wright.
State troopers, K9 units, Natural Resources Police along with the Chesapeake Search and Rescue scoured the area looking for Ring. Her lifeless body was found in a wooded area.
"It's such a sad and pathetic thing that people have to do that to young children---to anyone, let alone a small child. That would be quite a loss," said Lawson Narvell.
A person of interest is in custody.
Parents of the little girl's friends are finding it hard to explain to their children why anyone would take her life.
"She's in shock and she's at her father's house right now, so she was shocked. She used to walk to her friend's house. She's not going to be walking anymore," said Dawn Cannon.
An autopsy is being done to find out the circumstances of her death.
Police are not saying if the person of interest is connected to the family.
