Md. Plans Appeal Of Gun Permit Ruling
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Maryland's attorney general's office has filed a notice on plans to appeal last month's ruling that a portion of the state's gun permit law is unconstitutional.
The notice was filed Monday in federal court, days after U.S. District Judge Benson E. Legg stayed the ruling while he considers whether to require the state to enforce it during an appeal, as first reported by The Baltimore Sun.
Legg also clarified that his original ruling was meant to prohibit the enforcement of a state requirement that handgun-carry applicants have "good and substantial" reasons for their application.
While the ruling is appealed, Maryland State Police, the agency that processes permit applications, will not make decisions on applications in which approval rests solely on that clause.
