Md. Minor-League Team Fined In Worker's Death
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- The Hagerstown Suns minor league baseball team faces a $3,500 fine stemming from the death of a ballpark worker.
The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown reports that the Maryland Occupational Safety and Health agency issued the fine June 21 after investigating the death of 18-year-old Mitchell Akers of Smithsburg. The Suns have until July 16 to contest the
penalty.
Akers was a seasonal employee of the Suns, a Class A affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
Police say he was riding atop some garbage bags in the back of a utility vehicle when he fell and fractured his skull at Municipal Stadium on April 10.
The state also imposed fines totaling $5,600 for other alleged health and safety violations at the stadium.
